Film Club in the Parish Hall: This Friday 10th Dec... "Wild Rose"

Wild Rose (2018, 15, 1hr 41 min) [Comedy, Drama, Music]

Best Film & Best Actress at Scottish BAFTAs 2019.

Fresh out of jail after one year’s imprisonment, Rose-Lynn Harlan (Jessie Buckley) - a working-class girl from Glasgow - tries to rectify her chaotic life as she reunites with her children, who have been cared for during her imprisonment by their grandmother Marion (Julie Walters), who openly despises her daughter's lifestyle. A worker in the bakery at a shopping centre, Marion struggles to understand her daughter, who is determined to travel to Nashville to become a famous country singer. Thanks to Marion's good name, Rose-Lynn gets a job as a cleaning lady in the house of Susannah (Sophie Okenodo), an upper-class woman who hears Rose-Lyn singing and decides to help her get to Nashville by throwing a fund-raising party especially for her.

“Wild Rose” upends your expectations of how a film like this is supposed to play out -- how it should look, how it should sound. It also has the benefit of an electrifying, star-making performance in Jessie Buckley.
